Adult education and family literacy classes are non-credit and provide a range of basic skill instruction, English as a Second Language, GED preparation, and in some cases, high school credit. Classes are informal and instruction is individualized. Classes may be held in a variety of facilities, including churches, industrial plants, schools, libraries, and housing projects.

Services offered include:

ESL or English as a Second Language is a program for people who speak, read and write best in a language other than English and desire to improve their use of the English language. Entry-level English through college-prep English is available.

HiSET and High School Completion Center (testing and prep).

Adult Literacy program provides opportunities for adults in need of literacy skills and refresher basics in reading, writing and math. Adult Literacy classes are offered at various locations in and around Des Moines and in cooperation with local schools and organizations.

COLLEGE (core) classes for DMACC's associate degree programs and non credit classes for personal and professional development.

Continuing Education Classes are offered at DMACC.

F.I.S.H.: Friday international Student hospitality dinners, a program that helps build relationships between internationals and our community; it is a service of hospitality and sharing.

ENGLISH CLASSES: Classes include A Year in the Life of an ESL Student, Celebrate the American Way, and College the American Way.

THE INTERNATIONAL RESOURCE CENTER: Located on the North side of Memorial Lutheran Church. It is the meeting place for many classes and groups. You are welcome to use this room at other times, as a quiet place to study, to meet with a friend, or use the resources available. Resources include books and videos in English as well as other languages. Videos may be viewed in the TV/VCR in the room cupboard. The IRC is open whenever the church building is open.
Program offered to individuals who do not speak English and wish to learn.
Provides a culturally welcoming environment where families and individuals can gather to develop personal, educational, and family skills. Families learn about resources in the community and overcome barriers to make informed decisions. Includes education on financial literacy, health and nutrition, parenting, and other aspects of family life. Offers citizenship and ELL classes.
