Offers to recruit, train, and place volunteer tutors to work with adults 17 years and older to learn English as a Second Language or to improve their reading and/or math skills up to the 9th grade level. Tutoring takes place in public locations within specific geographical areas, aligning with local school district resources and services. STAR staff provide testing, learning materials, and support to tutors and their learners.

ELA classes expand English communication skills for students who are not native English speakers. Classroom, small group and computer instruction are designed to promote reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Students learn about personal communication, conducting business, work-related communication, and civic engagement.

Offers classes in conjunction with Joliet Junior College. Includes GED classes, English as a Second Language, and computer literacy. Also includes nutrition and financial literacy classes, not in conjunction with Joliet Junior College.

The college also offers English as a Second Language (ESOL) programs to support non-native speakers in developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills necessary for success in academic, professional, and community settings. In addition, the college delivers workforce training, continuing education and short-term credential programs aligned with regional industry needs, helping students quickly gain in-demand skills and enter or advance in the workforce.

Offers free English Language Classes for non-English speaking adults on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, in eight-week sessions throughout the year. Registration required.

Offers Basic Skills/GED® classes, English as a Second Language instruction, and programs that prepare individuals for U.S. citizenship by fostering an understanding of American culture, history, government, and civic responsibilities. Volunteer opportunities are also available.

Offers free educational services to individuals aged 16 and older, including GED/HSE preparation classes, online GED/HSE preparation, reading readiness, job skills, math readiness, healthcare, manufacturing, ESL (English as a Second Language), and transition skills classes. Citizenship education is available to help individuals understand U.S. history, government, and culture, and prepare for the responsibilities of citizenship. Literacy services and tutoring are provided to eligible individuals. Additionally, the program serves as a test site for high school equivalency exams such as the GED, HiSET, and TASC, enabling participants to obtain a high school equivalency certificate.

English classes offered at various levels. Prospective students enroll by filling out a registration form, taking a placement test, and paying a small fee for supplies. Students are then placed in a class according to their level. Instruction includes cooking classes, field trips, computer time, guest speakers, tutoring, and conversation partners.

Community courses run every spring, summer, and fall.

Offers different-level courses for the following languages: English, Spanish, ASL, and Arabic.

Courses generally last 10 consecutive weeks (except during summer when they run for 5 weeks), and classes are once a week for 1.5 hrs (except during summer when they run twice a week).

Courses are open to the community at no cost, except for a $15.00 registration fee that covers the class materials.

GED classes help adult students improve reading, math, science, and/or social studies knowledge, to help students pass the GED test and earn the equivalent of a high school diploma.

Citizenship classes help students prepare for the naturalization interview, as well as the 100 questions used for the civics portion of the naturalization test to become a US citizen. Classes meet twice a week, with one class being held in Columbus and one in Schuyler. Morning or evening classes are available, and students may start anytime during the year and continue for as long as needed until they have the confidence to pass the citizenship test. Classes are taught entirely in English; students must have a basic understanding of English to attend.

English as a Second Language (ESL) classes help students learn English through conversation, writing, and listening.

One-on-one employability skills help individuals look for and apply for jobs and are tailored to specific needs.

Provides basic instruction in listening, speaking, reading, and writing English for non-English speakers as a first language. Course content covers structure, pronunciation, vocabulary development, reading, and writing skills. Objective of the course is to develop an understanding of the language with a significant portion of class time devoted to hearing and discussion exercises. An oral assessment and/or standardized placement test will determine placement. Books are provided to students at no cost. 

Offers free classes for those who want to improve their ability to read, write, and speak English.

Provides refugee resettlement and immigration and citizenship services including refugee employment services, English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, housing, mediation, and counseling, assistance with green cards, citizenship, counseling, legal services.

On-site therapy, counseling, group-based programming, and individual/family case management to improve lives of immigrants who have experienced severe loss and trauma.
