Eligibility

Open to older adults (age 60 and older), individuals with a disability, families with children ages 5 and younger, or households that are disconnected from their utilities/energy vendors, have a disconnect date within 7 days, or have less that 25% in their propane tank can begin to apply

Required documents

Proof of income for the last 30 days (paystub, letter showing a fixed income amount (e.g. SSA, VA, DHS benefits) or other proof of documentation for any income source), copy of most recent bill for heating and/or electric bill issued within the last 30 days (if energy is directly paid for), Social Security card or ITIN, residents without an ITIN or SSN can still apply and their local administering agency will advise accordingly, copy of rental agreement (if renting) showing that heating utility(ies) is/are included, the monthly rental amount, and landlord contact information, proof of home ownership and property tax, proof the household received TANF or other benefits, such as Medical Eligibility or SNAP, if receiving assistance from the Illinois DHS

Energy assistance for eligible low-income families in which a benefit is paid directly to the utility companies on behalf of eligible households or for renters if the utility costs are included in their rent, the benefit will be paid directly to the landlord.

If the homeowner's furnace is not working or is dangerous or emitting carbon monoxide into the household, approved LIHEAP applicants may be able to apply for furnace repair or replacement.
