Free service to help victims of crime. Advocates guide victims through the criminal justice system and give information and referrals to other services for victims of crime in Douglas County.
The court process can be confusing and overwhelming. Advocates can answer questions and help victims understand the different steps that may happen in the court case, explain rights, and be present each step of the way.
The most important service provided by Victim Assistance Advocates is continued support for the victim and family throughout their involvement with the criminal justice system. Additional services available include:
-Information and orientation about the criminal justice system
-Information on the status of each case
-Help filing protection orders
-Courtroom tours, trial preparation, court accompaniment
-Help with Victim Impact Statements
-Help requesting state victim funds
-Referrals to community agencies
