Open to low and moderate income individuals

Required documents

- Social security Cards or ITIN Letters for everyone who will be included on the tax return - Photo Identification for all tax return signers (both spouses must sign if filing married filing jointly) - Records of revenue from self-employment, home-based businesses, and/or "side hustles" - Forms W-2 and all other income forms (1099-MISC, 1099-R, etc.) - Banking information for deposit/debit, including routing number and account number - Childcare receipts, including tax ID, phone number and street address for childcare provider - College students must bring their 1098T and student account information showing payment of tuition and qualified fees - Those who have health insurance through the marketplace must bring Form 1095A

Description

Provides a free virtual tax credit clinic to prepare federal and state income taxes for low to moderate income households.

Starting January 15, 2026, visit website to schedule a virtual appointment. (https://vita.unl.edu) Tax appointments begin Feb 1 and run through Apr 10. Tax documents can be uploaded on a separate website starting Feb 2, 2026. (www.getyourrefund.org/TCAN)

Virtual tax preparation is available in addition to facilitated self-assistance (schedule an appointment under the 'Need Assistance' tab).

The scope of work that can be done within the VITA site is defined by the IRS. If a return is considered "out of scope" for the site, VITA Volunteers will not be able to prepare the return.
