PCR tests, the standard diagnostic test for coronavirus and the most accurate, look for the genetic material of the coronavirus. These are the types of tests administered at Test Iowa locations and many others. The tests must be analyzed in a lab and take the longest to report results, often a week or more.

Rapid antigen tests look for protein fragments from the coronavirus and deliver results much more quickly, often in less than an hour. But they are considered less reliable than lab tests.

Antibody tests search for antibodies that the body makes to fight the coronavirus. Their presence indicates a person has presumably had the virus. The test, however, doesn't distinguish whether the infection is still active. It's also susceptible to false negatives if given too early in an infection, before the immune system can generate antibodies.
