A third-year law student, under supervision of a licensed attorney, will represent clients in a variety of non-fee generating cases. Civil law cases only, no criminal matters.

Helps increase access to education and employment, among other supports. Services include:

- Seeking expungements and sealing criminal records, restoring driver's licenses, and removing other barriers to employment, education and housing.

- SNAP and TANF denials, calculations, overpayments and sanctions.

- Special education, school discipline, and school enrollment issues.

- Community Care Program and Home Services Program issues.

- Tax disputes with IRS, including innocent spouse relief, identity theft, and collections.

- Ask a Lawyer Day: Free phone consultation with a volunteer attorney.

- Kane County Law Library and Self Help Legal Center: Attorneys provide volunteer consultation services, including divorce and family law help.

- Lawyer and legal agency referral services.

- Lawyer in the Lobby program at the 3rd Street Courthouse every Friday for civil matters such as landlord/tenant disputes, eviction cases, foreclosures, name changes, small claims, estates/wills, and guardianships.

Offers legal advice clinics to latinx immigrants. Individuals needing assistance with a legal issue can submit a request for help online with a few details on what the issue is. Once an appointment has been scheduled, individuals will have the opportunity to get free legal advice from a lawyer.

Provides pro bono (free) legal services to those in Polk County that meet income guidelines. The Volunteer Lawyers are mainly focused on assisting with family law. Lawyers can potentially help with divorces, child custody, child support, wills, and bankruptcy cased. Can only help with cases in Polk County.

Free legal assistance with civil legal problems involving basic necessities for low-income individuals in all 99 Iowa counties. Assistance ranges from providing counsel and advice to representation before various agencies and courts.

Community legal education presentations offered, as well as over 20 printed booklets on various legal topics; a wide variety of legal education materials are also available on the website.

Consumer/Finance - debt collection, repossession, garnishment, contracts/warranties, predatory lending, and public utilities (including utility disconnection or shut off notices).

The County Attorney provides prosecution and victim witness services, and is responsible for enforcement of laws and providing legal advice and defense to the county officials. Some of the duties of the County Attorney include prosecution of all crimes committed in the county; defense of the county in all action brought against it; collection of money due on forfeited bonds; legal advisor for the Board of Supervisors and other county officials in official business; and convene the grand jury.

Family Law Courts
Refers persons to private practicing attorneys in their area for the type of legal problem they have. Attorneys are not legal aid, low income, or pro bono. The free referral entitles the caller to a 30-minute consultation either on the phone or in the attorney's office for a fee of no more than $25, with no obligation. After the consultation, the attorney will charge the client regular fees - it is up to the client to discuss fees with the attorney.
Certified senior law students, working through the Civil Clinical Law Program at the University of Nebraska, College of Law, provide free legal services in certain types of civil legal cases to low-income persons.
Provides legal help to veterans in civil matters such as family law, consumer disputes, and evictions. The clinic also assists veterans with service-related matters such as discharge upgrades. The VLC collaborates with local veteran service organizations to holistically address the needs of their clients.
Offers an online Find a Lawyer program, Living Will forms, and the Handbook for Older Iowans, which covers health care decisions, wills, power of attorney, and landlord tenant rights. The handbook is available at no cost through the bar association, or at www.iowabar.org.
