Provides comprehensive services for victims of domestic violence. Services include shelters for those affected by domestic violence and outreach services. Shelter location is confidential and not available to the general public. Outreach Services include counseling, court assistance, and public education and presentations. Services also include support groups for victims and survivors.

Crisis Line is answered by a trained domestic violence advocate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Victims of domestic violence or their friends and family members can receive counseling, information, and education about domestic abuse issues.

Accessline provides free legal advice, brief service and representation to low-income people on areas such as: consumer law, family law, housing law, public benefits, disability benefits, employment/unemployment, public benefits, clearing a criminal history and educational rights.

After contacting one of the hotlines, cases may be referred to Legal Aid local offices for extended representation.

Private Attorney Involvement Program links clients to attorneys in their local area for free legal services in family law matters.

Taxpayer clinics educate low-income taxpayers about their tax rights and responsibilities and how to file for low-income tax credit.

Homeless Assistance Project (Douglas and Lancaster Counties) provides assistance with family law, child support modification, bankruptcy, license revocation, and disability claims.

Migrant Worker program provides civil legal services to migrant farm workers.

Housing counseling assists people who are homeless by making referrals and assessing their legal needs. Assists renters who are having problems getting things fixed, need help with landlord issues, or are facing eviction; work with HUD issues; assist home buyers or home owners with questions, etc.

Provides older adults assistance to apply for the Benefits Access Application (BAA), which offers a discount on license plate renewal and free bus passes. Once application is approved, a certificate of eligibility can be printed to take to one's local transit authority or Secretary of State Office. Qualifying individuals will receive a discount on their license plate renewal fee, making the plates available to them for $10. Bus passes will be free.

The Iowa Secretary of State's office issues Notary Public commissions for the State of Iowa. The responsibilities of an Iowa Notary Public are critical to the legal, business, financial, and real estate communities in the state. A Notary Public is a person commissioned by the Secretary of State to serve the public as an impartial and unbiased witness by identifying persons who come before the notary. The most common function of the notary is to witness and attest that a person signing a document is authentic.

Social workers link older adults, their families, and their caregivers with information on federal, state, and local services and benefits available to persons ages 50 and older. Outreach services include home visits to assess for support and service needs, assistance with accessing them, and provision of ongoing monitoring. Social Workers help clients apply for T-19 (Medicaid), food stamps, Elderly Waiver, day center, home-delivered meals, payee services, lifeline, Medicare/social security, medication assistance, property tax credit, and rent rebates.

Provides abuse and crisis intervention services to those going through abuse or a sexual assault situation. Services include a 24 hour crisis line, support services, crisis intervention, resources, support groups for adults, teens and children, medical and legal advocacy court accompaniment, prevention training and education, crisis intervention, counseling, emergency shelter, transportation to safety and other housing options.

Access to the agency's digital devices for the purposes of making and attending virtual medical and mental health appointments. Individuals can receive assistance to apply for mental health services with licensed professionals through our partner Lutheran Family Services. Staff can assist in applying for services. Assists individuals who need help applying for Medicaid so that they have easier access to the healthcare they need.

Provides interpretation and translation services, by appointment, including verbal interpretation and help with reading and editing letters or important documents. Please note: SCIC cannot and does not provide legal advice when helping to read legal documents.

The Clerk of Court provides public services related to court proceedings and maintains records of all court records. This office receives, files, and maintains all of the documentation that comprises the official court record for the following case types: felonies; misdemeanors; traffic violations; ordinance violations; civil, family, or paternity court cases; juvenile injunctions; restraining orders; and small claims court cases. The Clerk of Court is responsible for the collection of case related fees, fines and forfeitures; case management and event tracking; budget planning; records management; courtroom operation support; jury management; and facility planning. This office also issues copies of divorce decrees for divorces granted in the county court and provides assistance and necessary forms needed to file a petition with the court for a legal name change.
