Provides guidance and inspections in the areas of food, private septic, and private well water safety to prevent disease and protect the community. Issues food, private sewage disposal, and well water permits. Approves plans for new sewage disposal installations, inspects and approves well installations, and reviews plans for proposed food establishments. Investigates foodborne or waterborne illness complaints, sewage complaints, and collects well water samples. Conducts health and safety inspections for public and semi-public swimming pools and spas and responds to complaints regarding stagnant or unsecured private pools. Additionally, offers radon detection services through onsite testing or the provision of test kits for homes and other buildings.

Offers private well water testing, as funds are available, at no cost to the homeowner.

Contaminants commonly tested for are Coliform Bacteria, Nitrates, Arsenic, Manganese, and E. Coli. Limited homeowner reimbursement for well or cistern plugging and well reconstruction as funds are available.

Food Protection Program includes inspection of restaurant and retail food stores (HACCP concepts), USDA Food Safety Fact Sheets, Private Sewage Disposal Program includes Inspection of residential/business subsurface seepage systems, buried sandfilters, aerobic treatment plants, Potable Water Program, Water Well Construction Inspection: Testing of drinking water, Salon Inspection Program, Insect and Rodent Control, Nuisance Complaints.

Environmental services consists of five bureaus: water quality, air quality, field services and compliance, energy and waster management, land quality and Geological Survey.

Hazardous waste management programs, waste minimization programs, recycling programs, solid waste grants, composting, infectious waste, household hazardous materials (HHM) program, toxic clean-up days (TCDs), capacity assurance plan, low-level radioactive waste.

Waste Management: issues bulletins or otherwise inform the public of traffic accidents, train derailments, fires or accidents in chemical manufacturing plants or other incidents involving the release of chemical substances which pose a threat to the environment or public health. Also provides information on programs for recycling, solid waste grants, composting, infectious waste, household hazardous materials (HHM) program, toxic clean-up days (TCDs), capacity assurance plan, low-level radioactive waste.

Offers services including community health programs, disease information, control, and prevention, emergency preparedness programs through Alert Iowa, and support services such as personal care assistance for individuals, including help with hygiene, clothing care, mobility, and other essential daily activities to promote health and comfort.
