Holiday assistance is available to income-eligible West Des Moines residents.

Applications for December 2025 food assistance and Giftland Program (for children up to age 18) will follow the deadlines listed in the Hours below.

Thanksgiving food basket program. Provides $35 voucher to purchase Thanksgiving food at Save A Lot grocery store. The applicant will be given a voucher at the time they apply.

Offers a Thanksgiving basket for families in need, first come first serve. Pre-registration is online, after application has been submitted individuals will be added to a list. If a basket is available, individuals will be called and given instructions. Baskets will be delivered on November 22nd, 2025. 

Offering a drive-thru Thanksgiving and Christmas meal. Then a food basket is offered after the meal, generally distributed the Friday before the holidays. Please call ahead for information on meals. 

Thanksgiving meal - November 21st at 2 pm

Christmas Meal - December 19th at 2 pm 

Offers a community Thanksgiving meal in November. Residents may apply for special food box and toy distributions for Christmas.

- Toy Shop pick-up Dec 16-17, 2025.

Helps provide Christmas gifts for children and senior adults each year. Once registered and accepted, each Angel’s Christmas wish list is shared with donors in the community, who purchase new clothing and toys for the family.

For Thanksgiving 2025, the free community meal is held Thursday, November 27, from 11 am-2 pm.

2026 YouthHope Holiday Food Baskets

Holiday Food Basket Application begin October 1, 2026. Holiday baskets include holiday meal food items and a grocery gift certificate. Baskets are limited. Clients who apply for a food basket from another agency are not eligible. First-come, first-served. Basket recipients will receive a basket pick-up card at the time of application with details.

Application must be completed in-person during Food Pantry hours: Monday & Friday 9 am-12 pm. Families may select either Thanksgiving OR Christmas while supplies last. Please one ONE basket per family per year.

THANKSGIVING BASKET DISTRIBUTION: Thursday, November 19, 2026 (9 am-12 pm)

CHRISTMAS BASKET DISTRIBUTION: Thursday, December 17, 2026 (9 am-12 pm)

Provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day of the year. Special holiday meals are offered at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter.

Breakfast Mon-Sun: 7:30 am, Lunch Mon-Sun: 11:30 am, Dinner Mon-Sun: 5 pm, at chapel.

Thanksgiving Meal Wednesday before Thanksgiving: 12 pm.

Christmas Meal Christmas Eve Day 12 pm.

Easter Meal Easter Sunday: 12 pm.

For Thanksgiving 2025:

Offers a free meal delivered to older adults, 60 years of age or older (homebound or alone) on Thanksgiving Day. Meal consists of turkey, stuffing, potatoes, gravy, and more.

Reservations accepted Nov 3 to Nov 20, 2025.

Callers must speak with someone to make a reservation; no voice messages will be accepted. Phone lines are open on weekdays from 9 am-12 pm and 1 pm-4 pm.

Meal deliver occurs on Thanksgiving dinner. Applicant must be home to receive the meal (no meals will be left at the door).

Specific delivery times cannot be scheduled. Cannot feed families.

Thanksgiving Food Box preorder forms for 2025 available at the pantry, area churches, library, senior center, Christian charity, Bertrand Village office and Loomis Bank.

Preorder forms due November 7, 2025.

Empowers low income individuals and families in need with some food items to cook a Thanksgiving meal in their own home rather than eating at the Open Door Mission on Thanksgiving Day. This also includes extra groceries to help during the Holiday season when school is out. There will be only 1 Turkey 'N Fixins program per address.

For Thanksgiving 2025:

Beginning November 1st, 2025, community members can come to the Timberlake Outreach Center or the Council Bluffs Outreach Center (on the days they are open) and receive a turkey or a ham, along with some other traditional Thanksgiving specific foods as a part of their once a month shopping time. (Only one turkey or one ham per address.)

Program runs through Nov 27th, 2025. Individuals/families can receive Turkey 'N Fixins Wednesday-Saturday at the Timberlake Outreach Center, and on Tuesdays only at the Council Bluffs Outreach Center.

Individuals/families must have a current piece of mail in order to participate in the Turkey N Fixins program.

2026 dates are to-be-decided. Visit the website for the most up-to-date information.

Offers seasonal produce and other food to Center for People Clarity cardholders during expanded food distribution hours. Center offices will be closed during this event.

Thanksgiving 2025: Dinner served 5:30 pm-6:30 pm.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 2025: Lunch served 11:30 am-12:30 pm, dinner served 5:30 pm-6:30 pm.

For Thanksgiving and Christmas, people who use the pantry during the year are given holiday baskets. Call or visit the pantry for information about basket distribution dates and times.

For 2025:

Community dinner on Thanksgiving Day, 12 pm-3 pm. Call to request delivery.

Sign up for Christmas food boxes and toys for children before December 1, 2025. Visit the Salvation Army at 120 South 7th Street. Applicants must bring driver's license and proof of children in their home (insurance cards, Medicaid Cards, school IDs). Christmas food baskets/toys handed out on December 20, 2025, to those that registered.

Offers Thanksgiving food boxes, available on a first come first served basis.
