Specialty classes include cancer recovery and exercise, warm water arthritis therapy, Zumba, TRX; personal trainers and health coaches; lifestyle programs to help people with stress management, physical activity, nutrition, smoking cessation and more. Personal mentors provide professional expertise and motivational strategies.

Weight management and nutrition programs including LifeTracks medically supervised program for people who need to lose 50 pounds or more. LifePointe University helps children and their families with weight issues and nutrition consultations.

Cancer recovery programs.

Rehabilitation/medical services, offered with physician referral (hours vary), include physical therapy, warm water therapy, anticoagulation clinic, cardiac rehabilitation, chest pain/angina and heart failure therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation, diabetes education that includes medical nutrition therapy, assistance with insulin management and/or insulin pump instruction and gestational diabetes, foot care clinic.

Spa services include massage therapy, facial and skin treatment, body treatments, pedicures, and medical spa.

Dermatologist on staff. Cosmetic services such as Botox, fillers, and acne treatment.

Offers free public ice skating at 3 city parks when ice on the pond measures 4 inches deep. The city monitors ice depth and uses a green flag/red flag system to indicate safe/unsafe skating conditions. Locations are:

The Y offers a variety of activities for all ages including aquatics, fitness classes, dance/gymnastics, youth sports and adult recreation programs, along with daily child care. The Y's fitness amenities include a 25-meter indoor pool, whirlpool, sauna, steam room, more than 50 land and water exercise classes, an indoor track, two gymnasiums (basketball, volleyball, pickleball), two racquetball courts, free weights and nautilus weight room, and cardio theater (treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, stair climbers, 7 TVs with cable).
Education support, with the goal that youth and children will graduate from high school with the expectation of pursuing learning opportunities after high school.

Employability skills, so youth will be prepared to develop the skills needed to be gainfully employed; goal is that youth will be ready to get and keep a job at completion of their time at Hope.

Faith-based programming so that youth and children will have the opportunity to hear about and grow in the knowledge of God's love.

Offers a community center for senior citizens in the Johnston area. Congregate meals and a wide variety of activities to keep seniors active are available. Crown Point Community Center also is available for rent to the public for business meetings, weddings and other types of parties and functions.

Offers recreation programs and services to the residents of Des Moines. Parks, trails and public recreation facilities are available throughout the city.

The Recreation Division offers instruction in various sports as well as youth sports camps, outdoor aquatic centers and spray grounds. Red Cross swimming instruction is also available at some facilities. GRASP card offers discounts to low income families (up to 50% off).

Community Centers offer a variety of activities, open recreation, meeting space and are barrier free to allow for participation by persons with a disability. See individual listing for Community Centers.

Parks Division includes cemeteries, floral gardens and displays, golf courses, tennis courts, bike trails, picnic parks and shelters, swimming pools, and public boat ramps.

Offers swimming pools and spray pads open to the public. Some Aquatic Centers offer swim sessions, swimming lessons, and private and birthday party rentals. For season passes, passes are sold per household. Individual photo ID cards are required for each family member who wishes to have a pass. All pass holders must have a current photo taken or on file. Photos can be taken at City Hall or the Valley Junction Activity Center during regular business hours or at the West Des Moines Aquatic Centers starting the first week of the season during open swim hours.

The senior citizen center offers a variety of year round programs at their facilities. The department also operates an outdoor family aquatic center, activity center, skate park, ballfield complexes, tracks and 14 park areas and facilities.

Cresco Recreation Department offers a facility for people of all ages to participate in walking, swimming, exercise, basketball, volleyball, and other fitness activities. Facility includes a zero-entry swimming pool; a walking-running track that circles exercise equipment; a pair of basketball hoops; a gymnasium and stage; rooms for aerobics, dance, tumbling, wrestling, and other activities; a lower level with a golf driving range; softball and baseball hitting cages; rooms for arts and crafts; other activities for public use. The board operates the Rock Island Fitness and Activity Center, Longview Park Greenhouse, Whitewater Junction Family Aquatic Center, Saukie and Highland Springs Golf Courses, and Rock Island Sports Complex.
