Contracts with local professional artists to provide experiential arts workshops and residencies to under-served populations. These populations include: individuals with disabilities, low income seniors, at risk families and youth, individuals experiencing mental or medical situations, and often the general public through community events.

Artists are paid for these workshops which assists the artist in pursuing his/her career as an artist.

Works closely with partnering local organizations and schools to develop the arts programming.

Offers a wide variety of activities and classes for children, teens, and adults that include clubs and classes for active older adults, athletics, arts and crafts, dance classes, cultural activities, fitness, and seasonal special events.

Art classes in painting, drawing, clay, mixed media, and more. Classes take place on Saturdays in four-week long sessions. Youth ages 5-8, 9-12, and 13-16 can be registered.

Youth and Adult Scholarships are available as well as volunteer opportunites that can help pay for classes.

Presents approximately 12 exhibitions yearly, including the annual Holiday Treasures exhibition and the annual Amateur Competition and Exhibition. The Center also offers more than 40 art classes, 2 community art festivals, artist lectures, art workshops for children and adults, and many associated performing and literary arts presentations.

Seniors can come in for Creative Senior Connections classes or have a Creativity on Wheels (COW) box delivered every other month. COW participants receive follow-up phone calls after receiving their boxes.

Offers Classes that cover a variety of topics including art, foreign policy, history, spirituality, psychology, music appreciate, books club, foreign language, various arts and crafts, yoga and aquatic exercise. Instructors are volunteers. There are a few classes offered over Zoom.

Offers recreation programs and services to the residents of Des Moines. Parks, trails, and public recreation facilities are available throughout the city.

The Recreation Division provides instruction in various sports, youth sports camps, outdoor aquatic centers, spray grounds, and arts and crafts instruction for individuals interested in developing or enhancing their creative skills. Red Cross swimming instruction is also available at some facilities. The GRASP card offers discounts to low-income families (up to 50% off).

Community Centers offer a variety of activities, open recreation, meeting space, and are barrier-free to allow for participation by persons with a disability. See individual listing for Community Centers.

The Parks Division includes cemeteries, floral gardens and displays, golf courses, tennis courts, bike trails, picnic parks and shelters, swimming pools, and public boat ramps.

Provides recreational and educational opportunities for people of all ages, and strives to provide unlimited access to high-quality recreational programs and parks.
A variety of educational programs offer art experiences for children and adults.

The Musser Museum features many distinctive architectural details of the Edwardian period and portions of the Mary Musser Gilmore Collection of French Impressionism and portions of the Mississippi River Collection. The adjoining Stanley Gallery hosts national, traveling art exhibitions, and our own curated exhibitions.
