Collects property taxes, conducts annual tax sale for delinquent taxes, and administers the Active Duty and Senior Tax Deferral programs.

Senior Citizens Real Estate Tax Deferral program - allows qualified senior citizens to elect to defer all or part of the property taxes and special assessments on their principal residence. The property taxes and special assessments do not become due until after the death of the property owner or when the real estate is sold or no longer qualifies. A lien is placed on the property and interest is assessed at six % simple interest rate per year. An application must be submitted each year by March 1st for the taxes that will be paid in that year. This program is through the Illinois Department of Revenue and is not the same as the Senior Citizen Assessment Freeze or Senior Citizen Exception.

Active Duty Tax Deferral program - offers a property tax deferral service for any member of the Illinois National Guard or a Member of the United States Armed Forces Reserves for an extension of their property tax due date for up to 180 days after return from Active Duty. The reservist or guardsperson must make a reasonable effort to notify the county clerk and the county collector within 180 days after his or her deactivation and provide verification of the date of his or her deactivation. An installment of property taxes on the property of any reservist or guardsperson who fails to provide timely notice and verification of deactivation of the county clerk is subject to interest and penalties as delinquent taxes.
