Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) offers free tax preparation and electronic filing for low- to moderate-income Iowans, starting February 2025. Certified community volunteers prepare taxes with computer software and help with special tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or Disabled.

Tax Preparation Assistance is being offered starting Feb 3-Apr 11, 2025 through the Dubuque HACAP office. This site offers both in person by appointment assistance and drop off assistance. To schedule an appointment, visit the website https://www.hacap.org/vita

To use the Drop Off Services

- Stop by the HACAP office Mon-Fri 8 am-4:30 pm to pick up the following to complete at home: Intake form 13614-C, drop off consent form and tax envelope. Complete the forms in the envelope, write your name and phone number on the provided tax envelope ***(include intake form, drop off consent form, last years tax return, copies of ID and SSN and all tax documents)***, place envelope and all information in the drop box, wait for Tax Site to call and tell you that your return is ready to be picked up (approximately 2 weeks)

Those looking to get their taxes done MUST have a copy of their taxes from last year. Transcripts for last years taxes can be obtained for FREE by either visiting the website, IRS.gov, or by calling (800) 908-9946, turn around time is usually less than a week. A copy of your taxes will cost $50 and takes up to 6 weeks to receive. If you request online you will receive access immediately to print.

For people claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit, the IRS WILL NOT PROCESS until February 15th in an effort to decrease tax fraud nationwide.

For 2024, tax clinics will be held every Wednesday and Saturday in February.

The Wednesday tax clinics will be held at Central Community College (550 South Technical Boulevard, Hastings, NE 68901), in the Apple Room in the Student Hall. Dates are February 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th. Hours are 6 pm to 8 pm.

The Saturday tax clinics will be held at the Hastings Public Library (314 North Denver Avenue, Hastings, NE 68901), in the upstairs meeting room. Dates are Feb 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 24th. Hours are 10 am to 1 pm.

All tax clinics will be open to both appointments and walk-in clients as available. For clients looking to make an appointment, sign up at https://vita.unl.edu/signup/.

Each tax return takes approximately 1 hour; individuals must arrive no later than one hour before the tax clinic ends to assure enough time for a volunteer to assist in completing the taxes during the session.

Provides tax preparation assistance to low to moderate taxpayers, with a focus on older adults.

Provides free income tax return preparation for taxpayers earning up to $67,000 annually. Helps working families take advantage of all eligible tax credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit (CTC) and education credits. The scope of work that can be done within the VITA site is defined by the IRS. If a return is considered "out of scope" for the site, VITA Volunteers will not be able to prepare the return.
