The plant receives garbage from Ames and the surrounding communities in Story County. Private contractors are available to haul garbage, but citizens can do it themselves. The plant recovers reusable metals and garbage and recycles everything that's possible. The non-burnable material is sent to a landfill.

Recycling bins are available for food waste, glass, plastic bottles with screw-top lids, metal, clothing, cardboard, and mixed paper.

The county recycling center accepts cardboard, paper, #1 & #2 plastic, metal, glass (glass is accepted at the facility only - not in bins around the County), bicycles, barbecue grills, and lawn mowers. DES MOINES METRO WASTE AUTHORITY provides waste disposal and recycling and manages the Curb It! residential recycling program and Compost It! residential yard waste collection program. Offers technical advice on recycling and waste reduction for businesses and residents (may also visit www.whereitshouldgo.com).

METRO PARK WEST (515) 333-5618, and EAST LANDFILL (515) 967-2076, both accept trash, yard waste, appliances, and tires, all for a fee.

METRO COMPOST CENTER, 1601 Harriet St, provides compost for sale. Call for rates and hours.

METRO RECYCLING CENTERS have no-charge recycling drop-off for residents and businesses. Call for hours.
The sale of donated items sold in retail stores supports mission programs. People in the community donate gently used clothing, furniture and household items to Goodwill. The proceeds from the sales of the donated items subsidize mission programs, giving thousands of individuals in the Omaha area the chance to earn a living, find independence and succeed in life.

Goodwill also accepts residential computers, printers and monitors at no charge, regardless of age or condition. Drop off at any Goodwill donation center. No tube TVs.

-- West drop-off site: Parking Lot, 20801 Elkhorn Drive. Open daily 7 am-7 pm.
-- Northwest drop-off site: Mulhall's, 3615 North 120th Street (120th & Maple). Open daily 7 am-7 pm.
-- Northeast drop-off site: North 17th and Burt Streets (Fenced area, Southwest corner of intersection). Open daily 7:30 am-6 pm (Sep-Mar); 7:30 am-8 pm (Apr-Aug).
-- Southeast drop-off site: River City Recycling, 6404 South 60th Street (between Q and Harrison). This site accepts recyclables free and is a dump location for bulky items and general household waste (there is a fee for all materials except recyclables). Open Mon-Fri 8 am-4:30 pm, Sat 8 am-4:30 pm spring, summer, fall (8 am-12 pm winter).

Offers a sanitary landfill for various material disposal and provides guidance on recycling and household, and hazardous waste disposal.
Fayette County Recycling and Transfer Station offers a recycling center located at 18525 Lane Road, Fayette. The recycling center accepts plastics, cardboard, sorted office paper, newspaper, magazines, hardback books, and metal. Visit the website for a full list of accepted materials and specifics information. Electronics are not accepted at the recycling center and must be taken to the Fayette County Landfill.
Recycling Center accepts processed yard waste, white goods (i.e. stoves, water heaters, air conditioners, dryers, freezers, microwaves, etc), electronics, hazardous waste (paint, thinners), tires, scrap metals.

Accept green waste, appliances, electronic waste, tires and household hazardous materials.

Does not accept sharps (needles, razors, etc.), construction debris (wood, shingles, dock planks), explosives (ammunition, fireworks), radioactive materials, concrete or stone, furniture, pop cans, glass bottles, plastic, Styrofoam or cardboard.
Oversees two rural drop off sites:

-- West Lake Park - Gate 2 on 110th Avenue

Residents may recycle newspaper, cardboard, boxboard, mail, glass, aluminum, plastic, and magazines.

The Solid Waste and Recycling Management coordinates and maintains the waste and recycling program for the county on Highway 9 in Waukon. This office also monitors rural dumpsites which accept trash, recyclables, and larger items such as furniture but are not intended for appliances or constructions debris. Items that can be recycled include metal, old batteries, used motor oil, appliances, cardboard, plastic, and glass.
