Offers all DHS offices across the state during open hours for people to use as a warm/cool place to stay.

Offers a food pantry with meat, eggs, canned fruits and vegetables, and dry goods. Fresh produce may be available.

Provides nutritious lunches in a friendly environment. Each meal includes a combination of protein, vegetables, fruit, grain, and milk.

Menus are approved by a registered dietitian to ensure they meet 1/3 of the daily recommended intake of essential nutrients.

Assists older adults to remain independent in their home as long as possible by providing an evaluation of the older adults' needs, developing a plan of care to meet those needs, and monitoring their plan to make changes as appropriate to keep them independent.

Care coordinators also provide an evaluation in the hospital or at home to educate individuals about their resource options prior to entering a nursing home.

Provides property assessment, property value information, Homestead, Veteran and Family Farm Credit sign up.

Supportive home for those recovering from drug and alcohol addiction; residents must abide by the rules of the home, including never using drugs or alcohol while a resident. Homes may house men, women, women with children, or men with children.

Funds raised in the community are distributed to programs based on United Way focus areas:

- HEALTHY COMMUNITY: Invests in strategies that promote access to preventive and ongoing healthcare, recovery, and wellness supports across the lifespan. This includes maternal and child health, substance misuse prevention and recovery, and partnerships with CHAD agencies that deliver essential health services.

- YOUTH OPPORTUNITY: Focuses on ensuring every child and youth has access to equitable opportunities for growth, learning, and success. Strategies include childcare and early childhood education, in-school, after-school, and summer learning, youth literacy development, college and career readiness, and youth behavioral health.

- COMMUNITY RESILIENCY: Strengthens community resilience by ensuring individuals and families can meet their most basic needs while building pathways to stability. Strategies include homeless outreach and emergency shelters, housing stabilization through emergency rental and utility assistance and transitional living assistance, disaster relief and recovery, food access, and victim safety and recovery.

- FINANCIAL SECURITY: Focuses on increasing economic stability and upward mobility for individuals and families. Strategies include adult education and literacy, job training and career pathways, and financial education and coaching.

Provides assistance to veterans and their dependents in applying for federal benefits, including compensation or pension claims, and benefits available through federal, state, or local laws.

Offers basic reading, writing and math skills for adults. Available day and evening. Reading specialists who work with adults to improve their reading comprehension, speed, or vocabulary at any level.

Provides information about the history of Jackson County.

Offers adult basic education to improve basic reading, writing, math, life skills, and employability.

Provides recreation, sports, and fitness activities. Services include a summer camp, field trips, special visitors, recreation games, a aquatics center, dance classes, and more. 

Thanksgiving Assistance 2025 - Meal vouchers will be given for Thanksgiving 2025. Must visit in person for services, first come first serve basis. Decatur County may accept up to 60 individuals. Wayne County may accept up to 25 individuals.

Offers counseling to help individuals and families change by achieving behavioral, emotional, and/or attitudinal changes in the client, family, and/or social environment.

- Services may address concerns of conduct, identity, mood, anxiety, impulse control, addictive or behavioral concerns, other mental or emotional conditions, and adjustments to the transitions in the family life cycle.

Maintains official vital records (birth, death, marriage, civil union, etc.), property taxes (maintains property tax information), election authority and county board. 

Provides free adult day services for individuals with Medicaid. Offering free pick up and drop-off service, health and wellness support with a licensed nurse, activities,  small mental health workshops, and meals. 

Provides boxing and fitness services to youth. The program works to promote discipline, confidence, self-awareness, and healthy lifestyle habits through structured training sessions. Participants develop physical strength, endurance, coordination, and goal-setting skills as well as learning respect, accountability, perseverance, and teamwork.

Allows caregivers time to self-care while providing additional supports in the home. Helps connect families caring for seniors at home with needed respite and in-home services.

Additional respite hours may be available to caregivers of someone with dementia living at home, through Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care grant funding.

Offers an online caregiver self-assessment questionnaire. Caregivers may talk to a caring professional who can help them better understand and deal with the challenges they are facing in their role as caregiver. The questionnaire uses the results to determine the kind of help the caregiver needs and creates a customized plan to reduce caregiver stress and burnout.

Caregiver Specialists are available to coach family members and friends who are caring for an older adult.

Works with income-eligible homeowners to make their homes safer and more energy efficient by eliminating heat loss and air infiltration areas in the home. After the initial assessment, recommendations on home improvements are given to the homeowner and the Weatherization team will coordinate repairs with contractors. Examples of common improvements include sealing cracks, insulating attics, or repairing windows and doors. All improvements are completed at no cost to the homeowner.

Additional priority is given to households with elderly, disabled, and young children.
