Provides foster care programs designed to find safe, secure, and nurturing homes for children who cannot live with their families.

Services offered:

• Licensing, training, and becoming a foster parent.
• Stable foster placements for children and adolescents.
• Specialized care plans for youth with special needs (mental, behavioral, medical, and developmental).
• Independent living opportunity for older adolescents to transition from foster care to an independent lifestyle.
• Finding permanent solutions for children in foster care (returning to biological parents, kinship/guardianship, and adoption).

Provides a Housing Choice Voucher Programs. The rules and regulations for the Housing Choice Voucher Program are determined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The purpose of the Housing Choice Voucher Program is to provide rental assistance to eligible low-income families.

HUD determines the amount of funding that is available for rental assistance in each community. It is important to ensure that the funds are used to assist only those families who are eligible. The reason Housing Authorities have waiting lists is that there is not enough funding to assist all of the families who apply.

Furnace repair for homeowners only.

Offers affordable loans to individuals with disabilities and seniors to help acquisition of assistive technology, home repairs relating to health and safety (not home improvements to increase the value of the home), service animals, and employment tools. Also offers if qualified a forgivable loan for assistive technology. Offer a sliding scale interest rate ranging from 9-0% based on eligibility.

Most loans have flexible terms, up to 5 years. Most loans are capped at $2,500. Assistive technology loans may go up to $10,000, but there may be a waitlist for loans over $2,500.

Works with families to get them enrolled in the 1st Five Healthy Mental Development Initiative. 1st Five program builds partnerships between physician practices and public service providers to enhance high-quality well-child care. 1st Five promotes the use of developmental tools that support healthy mental development for young children during the first five years. By using a tool for all children that includes social-emotional development and family risk factors, providers are able to identify children at risk for developmental concerns that, if left untreated, would play out later in life.

Provides eye exams and hearing screenings to individuals in the community who need assistance. Accepts donations of old glasses and hearing aids. 

Financial assistance for mortgage, rent, or utilities, including water bill, if qualified. Do not provide security deposit or first month's rent. Do not help with utilities that have been turned off.

Offers to bring women into full participation in the mainstream of American society, exercising all the privileges and responsibilities there of in truly equal partnership with men. NOW Statement of Purpose 1966 NOW is a feminist, grassroots, political action organization. Members are involved in every issue relating to full equality for women. Locally, members organize actions and events dealing with issues they have chosen.

Offers a drive-through food pantry. Appointments available in case of emergency.

Provides education and consumer assistance designed to facilitate enrollment of county residents in the Illinois Health Insurance Marketplace. People in need of assistance due to language barriers, technology disadvantages, or a lack of understanding of health insurance can arrange to meet a counselor in person to assist them. 

Provides rural public transportation. One end of the trip (origin or destination) must be in the rural area. Can take clients to the SMTD (Sangamon Mass Transit District)  for transfers. 

Provides in-person and virtual tax assistance to anyone free of charge with a special focus on taxpayers who are over 50 or have low-to-moderate income for the 2026 tax season. Free, year-round tax assistance is also available on the Internet. Taxpayers can post tax questions to online tax assistors by visiting the website.

Provides information regarding healthcare emergency preparedness plans and preparedness activities for the Marion County Emergency Response Coalition. Also provides personal and family emergency preparation information.

Offers online support group that shares stories, resources, and sends positive messages in dealing with Autism.

Offers a before and after school program (BASP) that provides a variety of recreational games, arts and crafts, homework time, and recess at the park. 

Toys for Tots holiday program, providing gifts for children. For Christmas 2025: The Toys for Tots Application is open from October 1-November 17, 2025.

Apply online. You will receive a letter/voucher if you are accepted into the program. Heartland United Way works in partnership with the US Marine Corp each year to offer the Toys for Tots program. Children must be age 12 or younger and reside in the household.

Operates a 24 hour crisis hotline, maintained by master's level therapists, available to those impacted by sexual assault.

Medical advocacy crisis intervention services are also available 24 hours. Trained medical advocates respond to hospital ER staff in order to provide support to those in need.
