Applications accepted twice a year (usually spring and fall). Applications are available on the Habitat for Humanity QC website; applicants must complete the Contact Habitat form to be added to the list to receive an invitation to the next meeting.

Works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to families for no profit and a 2.625% interest rate.

Qualified families apply for partnership with Habitat based on three criteria: need for housing, ability to pay, and willingness to partner. Through the program, participants receive financial and homeowner education, one-on-one guidance through the process, and complete program requirements. After completing program requirements, families purchase their home with an affordable mortgage.

Offers a hand-up to area families in need of safe, decent and affordable housing. Works to keep homes affordable through the use of volunteer labor and affordable mortgages. Qualified applicants make less than 80 percent of the area median income and become full partners in the work of building or rehabilitating the future home.

In order to become a Habitat homeowner, the applicant must meet the following criteria,

Have a demonstrated need for housing.
Have a sufficient, stable and verifiable household income to support monthly mortgage payments. Mortgage payments do not exceed 30 percent of the homeowner's household income.


Be willing to complete 200-300 hours of sweat equity. These hours are completed on the build sites and through time spent at a nine-part education series homeowners are required to complete prior to moving into their home

Partner with families of low resources to renovate or build new houses to meet their needs. The family purchases their new home from Habitat for Humanity through a low interest mortgage.

Provides decent, affordable housing for low-income families by bringing together the necessary volunteers, experienced help, suppliers, city and government agencies, and families to form partnerships and build houses.

Builds and rehabilitates homes with the help of community volunteers and the receiving partner. The home is sold to the partner at no profit and financed with affordable no interest loan.

Sells homes to qualified families who do not currently own a home. The family receives a no-interest loan from Rockford Habitat to purchase the home. The family will pay the loan back over the next 20 or so years. Loan length and mortgage payment are based on individual family income. The average mortgage payment is around $500 a month. Families must volunteer at least 200 sweat equity hours during the construction of their home and take three financial management courses prior to the closing.

To qualify for the program, 4 categories are evaluated:

- Residency.

- Ability to pay.

- Need.

- Willingness to partner.

Applicant information is confidential. Habitat homes are completed from 6-18 months after the family is selected. The completion date depends on Habitat's fundraising success and volunteer availability, and home buyer family's readiness. Habitat cannot guarantee the home will be built in the community of buyers' choice. Location depends on the cost and availability of lots.

Building materials and appliances, new and used, are offered for sale to the public in the ReStore at 50% - 80% off of retail price, lumber, windows, toilets, showers, kitchen cabinets, floor, ceiling, and wall tile, as available.

Winneshiek County Habitat for Humanity provides houses built or renovated using as much volunteer labor and donated materials as possible. Recipients must be involved in the construction of the homes (sweat equity). Small monthly mortgage payments including taxes and insurance are repaid over a maximum of 25 years and deposited into a revolving "Fund For Humanity" which supports the construction of more houses.
