County level services provide direct emergency economic aid for vital necessities to veterans, their widow, and dependents, according to their needs. Personal visits for assistance and claims to housebound veterans or dependents. Must have an honorable or under honorable conditions discharge from active duty or wartime service. Must be a resident in Nebraska for the past one year and 6 months of that year in Jefferson County.

State level services do not require wartime service. Assist in completing applications for the Nebraska Veterans Aid Fund, fee exempt fishing and hunting, park permits, applications to the Nebraska Veterans Homes, and waivers of tuition.

Federal level services provide and/or complete Veteran Administration forms for claims relating but not limited to service connected compensation, disability pension, widow's pension, burial allowance, grave markers/headstones, educational benefits, home loans, insurance, indebtedness, and character of service upgrades.

Works in partnership with the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services to recruit and equip families to provide safe, caring, temporary care for a child while the birth family works towards reunification. Counseling clinic staffed by advanced students in the UNO Graduate Department of Counseling and supervised by licensed department faculty. Offers individual and group counseling for adolescents (age 13+), adults, couples, and families.

A short-term, in-home, community-based, intervention program (6-9 months) that works with families who have been identified by DCFS as at risk for foster care placement.

Designed to help families identify strengths, set goals and modify behaviors that put their children at risk, with the goal of safely maintaining the children in the home.

Provides free insurance counseling service for Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers. SHIP counselors can:

- Answer questions about Medicare Supplement insurance, long term care insurance, Medicare managed care plans and other health insurance.

- Organize and assist in filing Medicare Supplement claims.

- Analyze Medicare Supplement and long term care insurance policies.

- Appeal claim denials.

Provides permanent supportive housing for individuals and families experiencing chronic homelessness or fleeing domestic violence. Our program combines stable, affordable housing with ongoing case management and supportive services to help participants maintain housing, increase self-sufficiency and improve overall well-being.

Offers Child Care Expense Assistance through the Iowa Department of Human services is available to the children of income-eligible parents who are absent for a portion of the day due to employment or participation in academic or vocational training or PROMISE JOBS activities. Provides information, assistance, and referrals for challenges seniors face with independent living.

Assists seniors with Medicare enrollments and Part D changes (SHIP), Medicaid enrollment and recertification, SNAP applications, LIHEAP applications, and referrals to community programs that would be useful to seniors, including food assistance, mental health needs/counseling, transitioning to senior housing, assisted living, or skilled nursing facilities.

Offers low-cost spay/neuter assistance to owners who qualify in the Des Moines metro to help reduce unwanted litters and address the problem of pet overpopulation. Appointments are available on a limited first-come, first-served basis. 

Offers all DHS offices across the state during open hours for people to use as a warm/cool place to stay.

Offers interactive parenting classes, including family classes, group classes, and individual classes.

- Can be offered in the privacy of a client's home or within the community.

- Also offers wraparound supportive services for individuals and families.

Provides employment services which includes individual job-seeking support, resume and cover letter writing, group classes in employment readiness, referrals to career pathway training programs, and connections to local employers. Services may also include resource navigation, referrals to community resources, including healthcare, housing, education, and legal aid, assistance with understand mail, bills, and paperwork, guidance on using public benefits and services, and support checking on status of immigration documents.

Offers psychotherapy for the treatment of trauma. Helps people see traumatic memories in new, less distressing ways. Most commonly used for treating post-traumatic stress disorder but also effective for people suffering from other anxiety disorders, severe and persistent mental illness, and substance use disorders.

Provides care coordination and case management for adults age 60 and older, including help setting up in-home services, nursing home care assessments, and support with choosing services. Offers in-home help with cleaning, meals, laundry, shopping, errands, bathing, dressing, grooming, and special diets. Provides a 24-hour emergency response system for health and safety emergencies and automated medicine dispensers with alerts and reminders to help participants take medications on time.

Offers a program that helps you to save time and money through planning your meals and shopping strategies. Programming and materials may also be available online. 

Provides a voluntary program for individuals receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to assist with skill development and employment. Services include job search support, structured job search activities, and classroom training, which includes computer literacy instruction to help participants learn or improve their skills in using computers, hardware, and various software applications.

Provides a support group for individuals recovering from addictions.
