Offers an educational course on home buying for those looking to become more knowledgeable in purchasing a new home. Lessons focus on preparing for home ownership, shopping for a home, securing a mortgage, closing the loan, and being a home owner. Upon completion of the lessons, individuals may earn a homebuyer's certificate to take to your local lender. To earn a homebuyer's certificate, complete all six lessons and taking/passing the final test earns a homebuyer’s certificate. Many home loan programs require completion of a homebuyer course to qualify for a loan. Participants may access the course any time of day from any computer with Internet access.

All warming centers open in below-freezing temperatures and officially issued weather advisories and warmings, or when wind chills are below freezing. Open to the public with the only exception being personal ban/barres from a facility. Service and emotional support animals are welcome.

Provides financial help with heating and electric bills. Applications are accepted starting October 1st through August 15th or when funding is exhausted.

October is a priority period reserved for elderly, disabled, families with children 5 and under, and disconnected households. The general population can apply starting November 1st.

This program is not designed to pay a household's total energy costs. The amount of the benefit is based on number in the household, the 30-day income of the household and the source of heat. This is a one-time payment to the household's energy provider.

VITA Tax Site - Southeast Community College

Provides free tax credit clinics and prepares free federal and state income taxes for low to moderate income households.

Starting January 15, 2026, visit https://vita.unl.edu to schedule an appointment. Tax appointments begin Feb 1 and run through Apr 10 and are available at multiple sites in Lincoln. To see the days and times for all the locations, visit the website to download the site schedule.

Must make an appointment.

When scheduling an appointment, choose a site location and date. All location will be face-to-face; virtual preparation is available in addition to facilitated self-assistance (schedule an appointment under the 'Need Assistance' tab).

If Lincoln Public School and/or UNL is closed due to bad weather, all VITA sites are closed.

The scope of work that can be done within the VITA site is defined by the IRS. If a return is considered "out of scope" for the site, VITA Volunteers will not be able to prepare the return.

The program assists people in finding employment, funds training when needed to gain or retain a position, and provides assistance in obtaining work permits or official documentation required for work authorization.

The Adult Program serves people who are at least 18 years old and, if applicable, registered for Selective Service. The Dislocated Worker Program serves individuals registered for Selective Service who have lost their jobs and meet dislocated worker categories defined in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).

The Youth Program serves in-school youth (ages 14-21) and out-of-school youth (ages 16-24) who need assistance with training or education to enter the workforce successfully, with a focus on young people facing barriers to success. This includes government-subsidized summer employment programs that provide job opportunities in the public and private sectors during the summer months. Registration for these summer opportunities occurs during a spring application period.

Menard County Housing Authority

Provides and administers the Section 8 Housing Assistance Payments Program for existing housing. This program subsidizes the rent of eligible participants who live in approved, privately owned housing. This program requires application.

Offers the Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program which is a voluntary program designed to teach families how to utilize community resources in order to achieve independence and self-sufficiency through education and job training. All Housing Choice Voucher recipients are eligible to participate in the FSS program.

Offers Housing Counseling, Menard County Housing Authority serves as a HUD Approved Housing Counseling Agency.
