Offers enhancing accessibility and supporting individuals with mobility challenges by constructing wheelchair ramps and providing AmTryke therapeutic tricycles for those unable to use traditional bicycles. Additionally, the organization contributes to the development of future healthcare professionals by awarding scholarships to students pursuing careers in therapy and facilitating access to medical training equipment and devices that aid in the practice and mastery of medical procedures and treatment administration.

Provides alcohol and drug-free living environments, for men and women, with structure and peer-led recovery support groups.

Offers to coordinate health services by giving a social assessment and help obtaining a physician, payment sources, child birth education, prenatal education, and postpartum care.

Provides one-on-one, in-home classes for clients who came to America with refugee status. Offers acclimation education regarding cleaning (how to maintain a home) as well as fire safety.

Offers all DHS offices across the state during open hours for people to use as a warm/cool place to stay.

Offers work training to young men and women 18-25. Program offers opportunities in job training, goal setting, life skill classes, and discipleship.

Connects pregnant women or couples, and parents of children ages 0-5, to free family support services.

All services are provided by family support specialists who offer advice and help with resources for parenting success. Every family is approached ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​without judgment and with a focus on connecting families to the appropriate support services.

Provides a program that reimburses participating child development homes for serving healthy meals and snacks to children in care setting. 

DCFS has the primary responsibility of protecting children and strengthening families through the investigation and intervention of suspected child abuse or neglect by parents and other caregivers.

DCFS links families with community services to address struggles families are having, offers preventative services to referred families in an attempt to keep family units together to address findings of abuse/neglect, and works with families who have children under the legal custody of DCFS while working to reunify families when possible or provide a permanent home for children.

As part of its duties, DCFS also licenses and monitors all Illinois child welfare agencies, child care agencies, domestic and international adoption providers, and group homes in the state.

Provides food pantry items.

Provides essential resources, educational tools, and peer support for individuals seeking long-term sobriety. Each recovery center also provides a place to do laundry and take a shower. 

Provides community-based youth services. Services include a 24-hour crisis response for homeless, runaway, and "locked out" youth individuals ages 11-17. Home-based family counseling, assistance in accessing community resources, anger management and life skills support groups is provided as a component of services. 

Provides free income tax return preparation for taxpayers earning up to $67,000 annually. Helps working families take advantage of all eligible tax credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit (CTC) and education credits. Volunteers from the community help prepare basic, current-year tax returns for eligible taxpayers.

Tax preparation is offered primarily in-person by appointment, with an option for walk-in services at the Martin Luther King Community Center (Rock Island).

Walk-in services at the MLK Center are available from February 3rd, 2026, through April 4th (appointments cannot be made for this location). Hours are Tue-Thu 5 pm-8 pm, Sat 9 am-12 pm.

County level services provide direct emergency economic aid for vital necessities to veterans, their widow, and dependents, according to their needs. Personal visits for assistance and claims to housebound veterans or dependents. Must have an honorable or under honorable conditions discharge from active duty or wartime service. Must be a resident in Nebraska for the past one year and 6 months of that year in Polk County.

State level services do not require wartime service. Assists in completing applications for the Nebraska Veterans Aid Fund, fee exempt fishing and hunting permits, applications to the Nebraska Veterans Homes, and waivers of tuition.

Federal level services provide and/or complete Veteran Administration forms for claims relating but not limited to service connected compensation, disability pension, widow's pension, burial allowance, grave markers/headstones, educational benefits, home loans, insurance, indebtedness, and character of service upgrades.

Maintains county parks and recreation areas and provides hunter safety classes, camping, fishing and boating information. Outdoor recreational opportunities are available through county parks and outdoor wildlife areas.
