Provides free tax credit clinics and prepares free federal and state income taxes for underserved populations.

Starting January 2024, visit https://vita.unl.edu to schedule an appointment. Tax appointments begin January 11th and run through April 12th and are available at multiple sites in Lincoln and other Nebraska cities. To see the days and times for all the locations, visit the website to download the site schedule.

When scheduling an appointment, choose a site location and date. All location will be face-to-face; virtual preparation is available in addition to facilitated self-assistance (schedule an appointment under the 'Need Assistance' tab).

If Lincoln Public School and/or UNL is closed due to bad weather, all VITA sites are closed. In the event of bad weather, tune to KFOR 1240 for cancelations. Spanish-language assistance is available at Nebraska East Union.

The scope of work that can be done within the VITA site is defined by the IRS. If a return is considered "out of scope" for the site, VITA Volunteers will not be able to prepare the return.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance offers free tax help to low-income ($60,000 or less) people who cannot prepare their own tax forms.

Tax Counseling for the Elderly offers free tax help for all, with priority assistance to people age 60 and older. Most sites are operated by the AARP Foundation.

Those looking to get their taxes done MUST have a copy of their taxes from last year. Transcripts for last years taxes can be obtained for FREE by either visiting the website, IRS.gov, or by calling (800) 908-9946, turn around time is usually less than a week. A copy of your taxes will cost $50 and takes up to 6 weeks to receive. If you request online you will receive access immediately to print.

For people claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit, the IRS WILL NOT PROCESS until February 15th in an effort to decrease tax fraud nationwide.

Tax preparation for low and moderate income taxpayers of all ages, with special attention to people 60 and older.
Provides free income tax return preparation for taxpayers earning up to $64,000 annually. Helps working families take advantage of all eligible tax credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit (CTC) and education credits. Volunteers from the community help prepare basic, current-year tax returns for eligible taxpayers.

Starting January 2024, tax preparation is offered primarily in-person by appointment, with an option for walk-in services at the Martin Luther King Community Center.
